Turkmenistan, whose name means "Land of the Turkmen", is a Central Asian nation bordering Kazahkstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and the Caspian Sea. Over 4/5ths of the nation is covered by the Karakum desert, while its irrigated land is rich in cotton. Turkmenistan has a very repressive government, with bans on everything from the free press to the growth of facial hair. Reporters Without Borders ranked Turkmenistan 3rd on its list of the 10 Most Censored Countries in 2006, after North Korea and Burma.
