Latvia is a small country upon the Baltic Sea, with rolling plains and medieval castles adorning the land. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Latvia has turned away from Russian influences and has found a new identity as a Northern European, rather than Eastern European, country. In 2004, Latvia along with its fellow West-leaning Baltic neighbors Estonia and Lithuania joined the European Union.
