Estonia, along with Latvia and Lithuania, is one of the three "Baltic States" located in northeastern Europe, along the Baltic Sea. The Estonian people are closely related to Finns, and speak Estonian, a Finno-Ugric language quite similar to Finnish. Once part of the Swedish and Russian empires as well as the Soviet Union, Estonia now aligns itself with Western European interests as a member of the European Union.
